Shroeder asserts importance of implementing Wye Plantation accord
Palestine-Israel-Germany, Politics, 1/15/1999

German Chancellor Gerhard Shroeder asserted on Thursday the importance of implementing the Wye plantation accord that was mediated by Washington between the Israeli and Palestinian sides, reported the Kuwaiti news agency, Kuna. At a news conference in Berlin, Shroeder said, "Agreements are made to be implemented."

Germany and European Union governments urge the concerned parties to implement the accord in order to push forward the peace process in the Middle East, he added.

Asked whether he supports the proclamation of an independent Palestinian state, Shroeder said this issue should be discussed with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, last December, insinuated that his government would support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
