Parliamentarians speak on their unanimous vote for al-Assad's nomination for Presidency
Syria, Politics, 1/15/1999

The Syrian People's Assembly (PA) on Thursday concluded its deliberations and listened to interventions and presentations by its members on the nomination message from the Baath Party's leadership for President al-Assad's new term of office.

The PA members unanimously approved the nomination of President al-Assad for a new seven-year term of office to start as of March 13, 1999. In statements to ArabicNews.com, Ahmad Samir al-Nuri from Damascus said "The decision of the Baath Party regional leadership in nominating al-Assad's for a new term of office was a response to the aspirations of the Syrian people and a response to their hopes in deepening the gigantic achievements of al-Assad during the past 28 years under his leadership."

Al-Nuri indicated the stability and security enjoyed " under the leadership of President Hafez al-Assad." He added: "Prosperity in Syria, under the leadership of al-Assad covered all walks of life. The political pluralism in the country has helped in giving birth to the PA, which by its turn was able to modernize outdated laws to cope with developments in other world countries."

PA member Maha Qanout said, "Nominating President al-Assad for a new term of office means a continuation for national unity maintained by the Syrians under his leadership since November 1970."

PA member for the Syrian Communist Party Muhammad Rafaat al-Kurdi said: "In the name of our Syrian Communist Party and at the decision of its central committee I join my voice to other PA members in giving full support to the President's nomination. Our stand stems from our utmost appreciation for the President's traits in courageously with deep farsightedness leading the country towards achieving national objectives."

Omar al-Shalet, a member of the PA and chairman of Damascus's Chamber of Agriculture, told ArabicNews.com that full support of President al-Assad's nomination is built on the full backing "the President has given to people's organizations and vocational trade unions in Syria for maintaining their role in building up and progress."

He added " Thanks to President's wise policy Syria has achieved great strides in boosting its agricultural economy."

Citizen Nahi Bahsas told ArabicNews.com that nominating President al-Assad for a new constitutional term means more development projects, factories, universities and hospitals and renovation of agriculture and industry.

Syrian student Mahmoud Yassin said, "The nomination of the President means a perpetuation to national values of the hero of confronting Israel and liberating the occupied lands in the Golan and Lebanon as well as the leader who committed himself to achieving just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East region, giving up no grain of Arab lands and not bargaining with usurped Arab rights."
