Clark visits Cairo to launch campaign to release Abdul Rahman
Egypt-USA, Judicial, 1/15/1999
The London based al-Hayat daily was informed that former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, who is defending leader of the Islamic Group, Omar Abdul Rahman, will soon visit Cairo and meet with Egyptian lawyers to launch a campaign aimed at releasing the Egyptian Islamist Abdul Rahman.
Before the end of January, Clark will visit Tanzania in order to get acquainted with events of exploding the US embassy in its capital on August 7, 1998 as well as to become familiar with facts about the measures taken by the government following the explosion as well as investigations made with suspected persons.
Clark wants to submit a report in this regard to a non-governmental committee including legalized experts and politicians seeking to evaluate the policy pursued by the US government toward Islamic movements.
Clark visited Sudan in September last year following the air strikes carried out by the US against al-Shifaa medicinal factory then. He examined the factory and wrote a report he handed over to the committee, stressing that the factory was not dedicated to producing items used in manufacturing chemical weapons nor would it be able to produce such types of weapons in the future.
