Casablanca port workers strike abnormal, minister says
Morocco, Economics, 1/13/1999

The Moroccan equipment minister described as "abnormal." The 12-day strike staged recently by the Casablanca port workers, saying the protest movement was conducted without prior notice.

Bouamour Taghwane told the Chamber of Advisors (upper house) that the port authorities ensured the normal flow of activities in the port during the strike and some boats were diverted to other Moroccan ports. He said dialogue was opened with the concerned sides.

The workers, who were claiming a salary increase and other social benefits for the port employees and dockers, resumed work over the weekend.

The Casablanca port is the largest in Morocco, ensuring most of Morocco's trade transactions abroad.
