Moroccan political alliance calls for lifting embargo imposed on Iraq
Morocco-Iraq, Politics, 1/13/1999

The Democratic Koutla, the bloc gathering four major Moroccan political parties, has called for lifting the embargo imposed on Iraq since 1991.

The four political parties forming the Koutla -- the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), the Istiqlal Party (PI), the Party for Progress and Socialism (PPS) and the Organization for Democratic and Popular Action-- called on the Moroccan people to "express the indispensable solidarity with the Iraqi people."

The Koutla also urged Arab governments to act for the lifting of the "unfair" embargo, imposed on Iraq since 1991.

Three of the four parties of the Koutla, namely the USFP, PI and PPS are represented in the center-left coalition government, headed by Abderrahmane Youssoufi, leader of the USFP.

The USA and Britain launched last December 17 intensive air strikes against Iraq, under the pretext of "Iraq's refusal to cooperate fully" with UNSCOM, the United Nations mission in charge of dismantling Iraqi mass destruction weapons.

The Moroccan people condemned the strikes and popular rallies were staged in several cities to voice solidarity with the iraqi people.
