Russia opposes Iraqi parliament's recommendation to refuse implementation of UN resolutions
Regional-Iraq-Russia, Politics, 1/13/1999
The Russian ambassador to Kuwait, Vladimir Shishouv, has asserted that his country opposes the recommendation of the Iraqi Parliament that Iraq withdraw its recognition of UN Security Council resolutions, especially UN resolution 833 concerning Iraqi - Kuwaiti border demarcation.
In a statement to the Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am published on Tuesday, Shishouv added that Russia still calls on Iraq to implement UN Security Council resolutions and that Russia would consider any step towards refusal of UN resolutions a flagrant violation of international law.
He stressed that acting on the step taken by the Iraqi Parliament would be conductive to a new escalation in the region.
