Iraqi official threatens to withdraw recognition of UN resolutions
Iraq, Politics, 1/13/1999
Chairman of the Iraqi National Council (Parliament) Sadoun Hammadi said on Monday that the council has the right to call for withdrawing recognition of UN Security Council resolutions because the Security Council did not abide itself to its commitments concerning Iraq.
Hammadi who was taking to Iraqi television asked, "If the UN Security Council does not implement its assigned obligations, how come that the other side which is Iraq would be committed to these obligations?"
Hammadi added that the UN resolutions so far released intended to achieve peace and security and stability in the region and preserve the sovereignty of Iraq have not succeeded.
Hammadi added that the Iraqi leadership will continue studying the recommendations of the Iraqi National Council and that the council may hold other meetings addressing the same topic.
The Iraqi National Council last Sunday recommended the Iraqi leadership not to recognize the UN resolutions released against Iraq, including revoking Iraq's recognition of Kuwait.
