Report: Iraqi consul in Prague fled to a western country
Iraq-Czech Republic, Politics, 1/13/1999
The main Czech dailies on Tuesday published a report circulated by the Czech news agency which said that the Iraqi consul in Prague, Jaber Saleem, and his family fled to a Western country, supposedly Britain or Germany.
The report said that Saleem, an officer in the Iraqi intelligence, has in recent times supervised the activities of its elements in the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, adding that there is a conviction that Saleem carried with him codes of the secret cipher of the Iraqi embassy.
Other reports said that Saleem carried out a diplomatic activity against "Radio Free Europe" before it was broadcast towards Iraq.
The Czech dailies also quoted a statement made by Czech Foreign Minister Jan Kavan that his ministry learned about the disappearance of the Iraqi consul one month ago through Czech citizens who tried in vain to get entry visas to Iraq from the Iraqi embassy in Prague and from the Czech police who discovered that the consul is not available even at his residence in the Czech capital and that even the furniture of his house had also disappeared.
