Saudi, South Africa mediation efforts to settle Lockerbie issue
Libya-Saudi Arabia-South Africa, Politics, 1/13/1999

The South African president's envoy to Libya has asserted that the question of Lockerbie is in its final stages and that his Tuesday visit to Tripoli, accompanied by Saudi ambassador to the United States, Prince Bander Bin Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz, falls in the course of lengthy and tiring efforts exerted by both South Africa and Saudi Arabia in order to reach a just solution for this question.

In a statement with the Saudi daily Okaz issued on Tuesday, the South African envoy, Jakes Gerwel, said that during his visit to Libya he will meet with leader of the Libyan revolution, Col. Moammar Gaddafi, together with Prince Bandar in order to discuss with the Gaddafi final steps to settle the Lockerbie issue.

Gerwel described his visit to Libya as very important and possibly the last.

He added that the distinguished relations between Saudi Arabia and South Africa helped in providing this mission a success. He indicated that Saudi Arabia has invested its relations with Libya, on the one hand and with both Britain and the US, on the other to settle the long-lasting dispute.
