Moroccan party welcomes Moroccans unanimous rejection of US aggression against Iraq
Morocco, Politics, 1/12/1999

The political bureau of the Party for Progress and Socialism (PPS), a member of the governmental coalition, hailed the Moroccan people's "unanimous rejection of the US aggression against Iraq."

The PPS, which held a meeting over the weekend to assess the consequences of the recent US-British air strikes against Iraq, said in a statement that it "appreciates King Hassan II's decision to set up a crisis cell to follow up the evolution of the issue."

The USA and Britain launched last December 17 intensive air strikes against Iraq, under the pretext of "Iraq's refusal to cooperate fully" with UNSCOM, the United Nations mission in charge of dismantling Iraqi mass destruction weapons.

The PPS political bureau also paid tribute to the Moroccan parliament for "its firm position, decrying the aggression and renewing total backing to the Iraqi people," the statement said recalling the rallies of solidarity with the Iraqi people held in several Moroccan cities.

The PPS took a firm position against the attacks and the violation of international legality by the English-American coalition, the statement said, adding that the party renews condemnation of the aggression that affected thousands of civilian victims.

The PPS stated that the settlement of the crisis goes through the halt of air strikes and the "lifting of the unfair embargo imposed on Iraq."

The PPS further underlined that a well-prepared Arab summit is likely to help reach these goals.

Relatedly, a group of Moroccan non-governmental organizations on Saturday called on the Moroccan people to boycott all American and British products and missions.

The NGOs also urged, at a press conference in Rabat, the Moroccan government to unilaterally lift the embargo imposed on Iraq since 1991.
