On the nomination of President al-Assad for a new term of office

The Syrian People's Assembly on Monday at noon convened an extraordinary session to consider the message sent by the Baath Arab Socialist Party regional leadership concerning its unanimous decision to nominate Syrian President Hafez al-Assad for a fifth consecutive term.

Syrian People's Assembly Speaker Abdul Qader Qaddoura chaired this session in the presence of Syrian Prime Minister Mahmoud al-Zou'bi, his two deputies and the Cabinet ministers.

After his reading of the message, the PA speaker read the constitutional articles on the nomination of the Cabinet ministers and President al-Assad and the decision taken by the PA council in its last Sunday's meeting, as regards forming a special committee comprising members of the PA to consider the message of the Baath Party regional leadership on the nomination of al-Assad.

The Committee, headed by the PA Deputy Speaker Abdullah Mouselli, comprises 63 members and heads of PA permanent committees and representatives of all parties of the Progressive National Front (PNF), people's organizations, vocational unions, independents as well as economic, social, and cultural personalities at the PA.

The PA members unanimously agreed to forming the said committee and to pass the message to it. The special committee was due to hold a meeting on Monday evening to consider the message of the regional leadership and prepare the relevant report within 48 hours, as of the date of reference.

The message of the regional leadership was on the unanimous decision of the regional leadership as regards the nomination of the secretary general of the Baath Arab Socialist Party, Hafez al-Assad, for a new constitutional term. The message outlines the merits of President al-Assad that have enabled him to be a great leader, citing a unique leadership capability, bravery in shouldering responsibility, wisdom in taking decisions, adamantly defending the nation's rights and the dignity of the homeland, capability of detecting events and taking sound positions.

The message spoke about the difficulties, critical circumstances and decisive challenges to which the nation has been exposed and how Syria led by President Hafez al-Assad did not bow to any pressure nor did Syria make any concessions.

The message indicated that the nomination of President Hafez al-Assad for a new constitutional term is a real response to the people's rallying round his leadership and for enhancing national values of struggle and strengthening the country's democratic march.
