King Hassan II amnesties 1,043 detainees
Morocco, Politics, 1/11/1999
King Hassan II amnestied on Sunday 1,043 detainees on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the Independence Manifesto, the justice ministry said on Sunday.
A total amnesty was granted to 745 detainees, while 237 others had their jail terms reduced and 3 others had their life jail terms commuted to limited ones.
The 55th anniversary of the Independence Manifesto, marked this Monday, commemorates the event when scores of nationalist figures presented a petition to the French occupiers requesting Morocco's independence.
King Hassan II usually grants free pardon to detainees on the occasion of national and religious days.
