Report: Syrian-Jordanian closeness
Regional-Syria, Politics, 1/11/1999

Jordanian sources expressed optimism to the weekly "al-Osbo al-Arabi" over the possibility of opening a new page in the Syrian-Jordanian relations after the nearby arrival of King Hussein from Washington.

The Lebanese magazine quoted these sources as saying that political and media campaigns exchanged between the two countries will be halted, whereas the Jordanian-Syrian higher committee will be revived. It added this detente in relations between the two countries is manifested in the emergence of two positive indicators in the march of the Syrian - Jordanian relations: Syria's participation in the meetings of the Arab Parliamentary Union held in Amman and convening a meeting for the joint committee of al-Yarmouk basin in Amman.

The magazine added, quoting the same source, that the threatening atmospheres which have been prevailing Syrian- Jordanian relations will be eliminated very soon after King Hussein's arrival in Amman, where the King is expected to meet with a high-ranking Syrian figure that will visit Amman to congratulate the King on his safe return home.

The magazine said, quoting an Arab source in Beirut, that Egypt played a basic role in the closeness process and in improving relations between Syria and Jordan.
