UAE to hold global environmental conference
United Arab Emirates, Environment, 1/9/1999

The new millennium's first global environmental meeting will be held in Abu Dhabi in the year 2001, the Gulf News daily reported on Friday.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), in cooperation with the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) and other international organizations, will be organizing the global meeting.

The four-day event, entitled "Environment 2001 Conference and Exhibition," will be held on February 4 to 8 and presided over by UAE President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Klaus Topfer, the Undersecretary-General of the U.N. and Executive Director of UNEP, is now on a visit in Abu Dhabi at the invitation of the General Exhibition Corporation (GEC), the organizer of the event.

The conference would discuss sustainable development, special issues concerning the Middle East and developing countries, economics, the prevention and control of marine environmental pollution and other important subjects.
