Chirac: Peace on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks needs the implementation of land for peace formula

French President Jacques Chirac has asserted the need for serious work in order to implement the land-for-peace principle in the Middle East peace process as of this year in order to attain peace on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks.

He stressed France's readiness to play a role in this respect. During his meeting on Thursday with members of the diplomatic corps accredited to France on the occasion of Christmas and the new year, the French President asserted that there is no way to ensure peace for all and to enhance ultimate peace except through precise commitment to set obligations.

Chirac explained that reliance on the land-for-peace principle will be naturally conducive to the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Chirac, on the other hand, stressed that the US-British attacks against Iraq did not solve the problem. He called upon the UN Security Council to pursue new ways of dealing with Iraq in a way that will lead to lifting the embargo imposed on Iraq since 1991.

Chirac, at the same time warned against weakening the UN, saying that it is indispensable.
