Six Arab states agree to attend consultative meeting
Regional, Politics, 1/8/1999
Syria, Yemen, and Oman informed the Arab League on Thursday of their consent to take part in the consultation meeting of the Arab foreign ministers due to be held on January 24, under the chairmanship of Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa as Syria is the current President of the Arab League council.
Kuwait was the first Arab country to inform the Arab League of its consent to attend the meeting, followed by Sudan. On Wednesday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa announced the consent of Egypt to attend the ministerial consultative meeting.
Arab diplomatic sources in Cairo said that the Arab ministerial presence will be considerable due to the fact that the "meeting's agenda is open and any country has the right to debate any topic, despite the fact that the main title of the meeting according to the invitation of the Arab League secretary general "is to discuss the current Arab conditions, foremost being the situation in Iraq."
Tunisia expressed support for convening any Arab meeting on the level of a summit and stressed at the same time its backing for Arab solidarity. An official at the Tunisian Foreign Ministry stressed on Thursday Syria's support for convening an Arab summit but under the conditions of good preparations and the participation of all sides to ensure the meeting's success in carrying out set objectives.
The same source reiterated Tunisia's commitment to Arab solidarity and to settle pending disputes through dialogue in the context of the Arab League to serve the greater good of Arab interests.
