Syria makes great progress in health and basic survices, has highest fertility rate in the world

According to the report published by UNICEF for 1999, mortality rate among Syrian children had been reduced between the years 1960 and 1997 from 201 to 33 per thousand, and the mortality rate among infants for the same period decreased from 136 to 27 per thousand.

According to the report Syria's population was in 1997 14.951 million. Worthy mentioning that numbers of births during 1997 reached 457,000, a fact which reveals that Syria is among the highest fertility rate countries.

The report indicates the decrease in the number of deaths among Syrian children to 15 per thousand in 1997, whereas this rate in countries like the Philippines was 83 per thousand and 714 per thousand in Pakistan, a matter which show the care accorded to the health sector in Syria.

According to statistics of 1996 the GNP per capita estimated at $1160. Syria, on the other hand, is among the best countries in ensuring clear potable water. Clear water is provided between the years 1990- 1997 in cities at 95% and the rural areas at 77%.

In the area of children immunization and providing vaccines, the country's vaccination campaign between 1995-1997 was fully carried out at 100%. Syria is considered a country of young population. Its population under 18 is estimated at 7.579 million, some 2.117 million under five. Population growth average reduced between 1970 and 1990 from 3.4% to 2.7%. Yet the population growth average is till high.

Average life expectancy average in Syria was 56 in 1970 and in 1997 was 69 years. Fertility rate was 4.1% in 1997. The report said that inflation rate between 1990 and 1996 was 9%. The report indicated that Syria spends 4% of its budget on health, 10% on education and 29% on defense.
