Group of organizations calls for fighting corruption in Morocco
Morocco, Politics, 1/7/1999

A group of Moroccan non-governmental associations called for promoting the values of honesty, transparency and integrity in society and support all measures meant to establish a genuine system of good governance.

The associations released on Wednesday a statement entitled "pact for a corruption-free Morocco" at the end of a press conference in Rabat to mark the third national anti-corruption day. The associations insisted on the need to place general interest at the top of all concerns and to fight the culture of fear with resolve, dignity and perseverance to usher in a new era of justice and freedom.

Representatives of the associations stressed that the struggle against corruption requires the efforts of all, and mainly the participation of civil society, liberal professions, the media and professional associations.

They added that this endeavor also requires public awareness, reforms and the fair enforcement of justice.

The associations have submitted to the prime minister a memorandum drafted after several meetings. The associations called on the government to make public the findings of controls, audits, investigations or prosecutions in cases of corruption or embezzlement of public funds.

The memorandum urges the government to encourage the action of the civil society in promoting public awareness and political debates on means to fight corruption and improve the transparency of public affairs and transactions.

The government's commitment to fight corruption should be honored by concrete measures and by a cohesive and global policy that should be made public in order to make citizens contribute in its implementations, the associations argued.

The memorandum also calls for canceling the special court of justice that rules on corruption cases and for reforming penal provisions to protect corruption victims. The associations deemed that prosecutors should start legal procedures on corruption and misappropriation cases reported by public statements or by the media.
