Lahoud: Lebanon's interest lies in cohesion of Syrian, Lebanese tracks
Lebanon, Politics, 1/7/1999
Lebanese President Emile Lahoud has asserted that Lebanon's national interest lies in the inseparability of the Syrian and Lebanese tracks, regardless of conditions and considerations.
During his Wednesday meeting with members of the Arab and foreign diplomatic corps accredited to Lebanon at Baabda Palace on the occasion of the new year, the Lebanese President said "We have our rights and the Lebanese resistance is based on this very right. We believe that just and comprehensive peace is the guarantee for attaining peace for all in the region and that the concept of peace for us means rejection of separate steps which are conducive to half peace that does not serve security in the region nor ensure commitment to withdrawal from the occupied lands."
The Lebanese president extended greetings to members of the diplomatic corps over their governments' contributions in rebuilding Lebanon and supporting its national efforts to put an end to the Israeli occupation of south Lebanon. He said addressing the diplomats: "Your countries contributed to supporting Lebanon and are still doing so. Some are helping in building the Lebanese Army, others in supporting our position at the UN and on daily basis in the April Understanding Monitoring Committee."
Meanwhile, the Papal nuncio to Lebanon, Antonio Mariavelio, who attended the meeting, gave a speech in which he highlighted the traits of the Lebanese president and his "swearing-in speech" before the Lebanese Parliament.
The papal nuncio expressed hope that peace and security will be deepened in Lebanon and national reconciliation will be established further among the Lebanese people with best wishes for their prosperity. He also hoped that peace will be established in the region so all will leave in peace.
