AL chief, German official discuss Mideast peace
Regional-Germany, Politics, 1/6/1999

Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid on Tuesday in Cairo discussed with German Deputy Foreign Minister Von Huslen the Middle East peace process and the sufferings of the Iraqi people as a result of the embargo.

In a statement he made following his meeting with the AL chief, the German official, whose country is now holding the European Union presidency, stressed the EU's opposition to Israel's refusal to abide by the implementation of agreements already signed between it and certain Arab parties.

He asserted his country's economic support for the Palestinians, noting in this respect that on May 4, 1999, a conference for the donor states will be held in Germany.

He continued that the German foreign minister will visit the Middle East in February 1999.

Concerning the sufferings of the Iraqi people, the German official expressed his country's concern, saying that Germany wants to make a humanitarian initiative to organize relief aid for the Iraqi people.
