Lebanese resistance issues annual report
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 1/6/1999

The year 1998 was a turning point in the qualitative resistance operations carried out by the Lebanese resistance against the Israeli occupation forces and the Israeli-allied South Lebanon Army militia in the occupied part of south Lebanon.

The annual report prepared by the Lebanese resistance revealed a notable increase in the number and quality of military operations which targeted at certain times enemy positions that are just hundreds of meters away from the Lebanese border with Israel. The report also said Israeli brutality is exceeding all "red lines" as well as its non-abidance to security and political agreements, a matter which increased the number of Lebanese civilians who were massacred by the Israelis.

The annual report said that Lebanese resistance forces conducted in 1998 1,519 attacks compared to 850 attacks during 1997, representing an increase of 669 operations.

The report said that some 26 Israelis were killed and 144 wounded in 1998, whereas 45 were killed and 100 wounded in 1997.

The report added that some 35 SLA elements were killed and 55 wounded in 1998, whereas in 1997 some 23 SLA militia men were killed and 60 wounded.

In its attacks during 1998, the Lebanese resistance destroyed nine (9) Merkava tanks and 42 armored vehicles. The resistance said it had lost during 1998 some 37 of its men as martyrs in operations against the occupation troops or in Israeli assassinations.

During 1998, the report added, Israel escalated its land, sea and air attacks and the number of these attacks increased to 1,700, resulting in the death of 21 civilians and the wounding of 100, as well as damaging 340 houses.

The report indicated that the most severe of the Israeli massacres in 1998 against the Lebanese civilians was the air raid which struck Jenta town in the Bekaa in December and resulted in the death of 8 civilians, including a mother and her 6 children.

The statement added that the year 1998 witnessed an important step embodied in the withdrawal of the SLA militia from the gate of "Daher al-Mashnaqa" in Saffareya and Kfar Fallous and from a barrier in Annan town in Jezzine district.

The report added that in 1998 the Israeli occupation forces deported 38 persons to the areas in the northern part of occupied south Lebanon and arrested another 318 persons.
