Report: Netanyahu prepares military - political plan to strike Syria, Lebanon
Syria-Israel, Politics, 1/6/1999
The Egyptian "Al-Osbo" (the week) paper has said that the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked his senior aides to prepare a military and political plan to launch a quick war against Syria and Lebanon with the objective of convincing the Israeli voters that he (Netanyahu) is the best choice for preserving Israeli security.
The paper said that such a war will take place before the early Israeli elections in May. Well-informed sources told the Egyptian paper that Netanyahu has recently summoned six of his very close political and military aides and that some of those aides proposed such a war to be limited to deal a blow into the "Lebanese depth," but Netanyahu considered the Syrian front as "the most important" and that the aides agreed with him.
Al-Osbo reported that a study was submitted to Netanyahu stressing that the sophisticated Israeli weapons and missiles systems can decide the military operations against Syria within three day, at most.
The study proposed that the initial military scenario against Syria is based on eliminating the efficiency of Syrian missiles and weapons so that Syria would not be able to use these missiles, especially in "the depth of Israel."
The paper said the proposed Israeli operation aims at expanding the security zone in the Golan, thereby Israel can win a new military position which would enable it to increase its power in confrontation of the Syrian Army.
