Cuban president praises Syrian president
Regional-Cuba, Politics, 1/5/1999

President Fidel Castro of Cuba has praised Syrian President Hafez al-Assad's "wise and courageous leadership and his farsightedness towards the Middle East situation."

During his meeting on Monday in Havana with the speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, the Cuban president added that President al-Assad "is a real and historic example for the region."

In a statement quoted by the press mission accompanying Berri, Castro said: "Days have proven that the Syrian President was the only one who enjoys future visions towards the Middle East peace process."

He described the Israeli policy as one, whether it is called Labor or Likud. He condemned Israel's repeated aggressions against south Lebanon and the western Bekaa.

The Cuban president also said, "What is happening in the Gulf is an American attempt to blackmail the region's member states."

However, the Lebanese and Cuban sides stressed the need for implementing UN resolutions related to the Middle East, the implementation of the land-for-peace formula and Israel's full and unconditional withdrawal from south Lebanon, the western Bekaa and the Syrian Golan Heights to the June 4, 1967 border lines.
