Egyptian ambassador in Jordan meets with Iraqi reconciliation movement delegation
Egypt-Iraq, Politics, 1/5/1999
The Egyptian ambassador in Amman, Hani Riyadh, has met with a delegation representing the "Iraqi National Reconciliation" opposition movement, which has Jordan as its headquarters.
Iraqi opposition sources said the delegation handed the Egyptian ambassador a message from the movement's secretary general, Iyad Allawi, to be conveyed to President Hosni Mubarak. The delegation comprised members of the movement's political bureau Muaz Abdul Rahman and Dergham Kazem. Kazem said the message states the "movement's appraisal of the stances taken by the Egyptian president in making a distinction between the Iraqi people and the regime of the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and holding the latter responsible for the sufferings of the Iraqi people."
Kazem added that the meeting with the Egyptian ambassador revealed similar view points to statements made by President Hosni Mubarak on the question of the Iraqi people, including "a strong impetus through making a distinction between the Iraqi people and the ruling regime."
Jordanian political sources indicated that the Egyptian position reflects an Arab concern over the "defaming campaign against the Arab states under the pretext of not siding with the Iraqi regime." The sources added that Baghdad has criticized Jordan, Egypt and other countries "in a way which will not help Iraq get out of its economic siege, rather increase its political isolation."
The Egyptian step is being made after Iraqi official sources asserted that Baghdad seeks to "make the Arab street move" after it failed to gain official Arab support.
