Baghdad condemns postponement of Arab foreign ministers meeting
Regional, Politics, 12/30/1998

Iraq has officially condemned the Arab League decision to postpone up to next January 24 the Arab foreign ministers meeting which was scheduled last week.

A spokesman for the Iraqi foreign affairs ministry termed the decision as "a dangerous precedent" violating the league's functioning rules.

"It is a dangerous precedent because no Arab league meeting has ever been canceled or deferred in the past due to the refusal of a minority of its members," the spokesman said.

The Arab League has justified the postponement by the request made in this regard by three countries of the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council.

Iraqi media condemned the postponement, which it said, was ordered by Washington to absorb the Arab people's anger triggered by the US-British missile strikes.
