Israel continues attacks in south Lebanon targeting mountainous routes
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 12/30/1998

Israeli occupied forces on Tuesday renewed their attacks on areas adjacent to the occupied part of south Lebanon and its western Bekaa. The attacks were accompanied by intensive machine-gun fire targeting mountainous routes which link al-Tuffah district to the occupied strip of south Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Israeli jet fighters also carried out mock raids at low altitudes over areas in the south, dropping scores of thermal balloons.

In retaliation, the Lebanese resistance bombarded Kawkaba position, using artillery shells and rockets and direct hits were achieved.

Meanwhile, the pro-Israeli South Lebanon Army militia evacuated the Anan position and Mahalat al-Mashnaqa barricade in Jezzine. News reports from south Lebanon asserted that this withdrawal was carried out when some SLA militia elements refused to deploy around Jezzine without reinforcements.

For its part, the Lebanese resistance expressed satisfaction over the SLA withdrawal from the Anan and Mashnaqa positions. A high-ranking source in the Lebanese resistance stressed that this withdrawal came as a result of the strong attacks carried out by the Lebanese resistance against the pro-Israeli SLA militia's leaders.

On Tuesday afternoon, Lebanese resistance forces carried out a series of operations against Israeli troops positions and their collaborators in the occupied part of south Lebanon. Earlier in the day, resistance forces also attacked two Israeli positions in Barachit and Beer Klab. The attacks achieved direct hits among the elements of the two positions, according to a statement released by the resistance.

In the early morning, Israeli troops shelled the outskirts of the towns of Shawqin, Barachit, Eta al-Jabal, al-Zaatar and the surroundings of Sujoud and Beer Klab positions.

The Israeli shelling caused material damage to property, said news reports from south Lebanon.
