Moroccan official says Arab parliamentarians meeting was a success
Morocco, Politics, 12/29/1998

Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives Abdelouahed Radi, who attended on Sunday the extraordinary session of the Arab Parliamentary Union held in Amman, said the meeting was a success.

In a statement to the media after his return to Morocco, the Moroccan official said the Amman meeting on the US-British raids against Iraq and the lifting of the embargo was crowned with "success."

The session condemned the U.S. and British strikes against Iraq, saying they jeopardized regional peace and worsened the hardships of Iraqis facing U.N. sanctions.

In a statement they published at the end of a one-day meeting of the Arab Parliamentary Union held one week after the "Desert Fox" operation, the 14 delegates condemned the U.S-led strikes and called the UN Security Council to guarantee that this kind of attacks will not occur again.

The legislators also called their governments to endeavor for the lifting of the eight-year long embargo enforced against Iraq and urged for the cancellation of the no-fly zones decreed in northern and southern Iraq, saying these areas have been decreed without international resolutions and they jeopardize Iraq's unity and sovereignty.

The Arab MPs also decided to send a delegation to Iraq to express the Union's solidarity with Baghdad and to assess the damage inflicted by the US-British bombings. It was also agreed to send a delegation to Europe to review with other European parliaments the lifting of anti-Iraqi sanctions and to send to Russian and Chinese parliaments "messages of consideration for their stance regarding the aggression against Iraq."
