Iraqi opposition intends to reassemble
Iraq, Politics, 12/29/1998
Sources from the High Islamic Revolutionary Council in Iraq, headquartered in Iran, said that the Iraqi opposition in exile is thinking of a reassembly formula to be examined.
The representative of the high council, Hamed El-Bayatti, said that establishing a political assembly was the core of discussions in two meetings held last month between representatives of parties, opposition personalities and independent figures on one hand, and US and British officials on the other.
The representative added that the first meeting was held with the British Minister for Foreign Affairs Derek Fatchett while the second meeting was held in the presence of US Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs Martin Indyk.
He also stated that more than one formula has been suggested to the opposition forces.
