Syrian-Lebanese higher economic committee meets in Beirut
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 12/29/1998

The Syrian-Lebanese higher economic committee started its deliberations on Monday in Beirut chaired by Syrian Prime Minister Mahmoud al-Zou'bi and his Lebanese counterpart, Salim al-Hoss.

Al-Hoss stressed that the Arab states cannot counter globalization without achieving the common Arab market.

The Syrian premier for his part, stressed that Syria places all "its potentials under Lebanon's disposal." He added, "I am sure that the previous steps we made and the future steps will form a strong base for enhancing Syria's and Lebanon's strength."

Members of the two countries' joint committee discussed various issues of cooperation between Syria and Lebanon and the mechanism for implementing what was agreed upon pertaining to the free exchange of national industrial products and reduction of customs tariffs by 25%.

In a press conference held following the meeting, the Lebanese Premier said the meeting was quite satisfactory and fruitful. He added "We confirmed that we shall start implementing what we agreed on as of January 1, 1999."

Later in the day, the two prime ministers held a meeting in the presence of members of the two delegations. Talks dealt with relations between the two countries and means of strengthening them, as well as the agenda of the Syrian-Lebanese economic committee.

The Syrian side was accompanied by the deputy premier for economic affairs, the ministers of economy, finance and agriculture and industry and a number of deputy ministers and advisers.
