Yemeni tribe clans explode main oil pipelines
Yemen, Local, 12/29/1998
It was announced in Sanaa on Monday than Yemeni tribal clans exploded the main oil pipeline in Yemen. So far the volume of damage and the effect of the explosion on production have not been determined.
A Yemeni official source said that a group of tribesmen exploded the oil pipelines in Maareb, 170 km east of Sanaa on Saturday at dawn. The US Hunt Oil and Exxon companies monitor the oil fields in this very rich oil province.
On Sunday, the Yemeni daily al-Ayam said that tribal leaders had warned oil workers in Maareb to evacuate the area and many of those workers fled in fear for their lives.
The paper did not mention the name of the tribes that carried out the attack but noted that the warning side claimed that Maareb oil fields are the private property of al-Kharis tribe, one of the main tribes in Maareb.
