Moroccans pray for rain
Morocco, Politics, 12/26/1998
Moroccan believers performed on Friday prayers for rain that has registered an alarming deficit this year, threatening the North African nation with the prospect of drought.
Morocco's agricultural sector, which accounts for around 20 percent of the GDP and employs nearly half of an estimated 10-million workforce, relies mainly on rain.
The sector's contribution to the economy is so important that a constitutional amendment was introduced to consider Morocco's fiscal year as running from July to June to enable the appropriation bill drafters take into account the state of the cereal harvest and agriculture in general.
This is the second time that Moroccans, mostly Muslims, have performed prayers for rain. Last month they were joined by the country's Jewish community.
