Iraq prevents UN plane from landing in Baghdad

The Iraqi authorities on Wednesday prevented a UN plane from landing near Baghdad to take UN envoy Prakash Shah outside the country.

On the humanitarian level, an official at the UN said that staff of the UN Humanitarian program resumed their activities on Wednesday just following their arrival to Iraq from Amman. The media spokesman for the program, Khaled al-Azzi, said that all the 110 staff member immediately resumed their work in supervising discharging three ships loaded with cereals and foodstuffs at Um al-Qasr port in southern Iraq.

Al-Azzi added that a team of employees will also immediately start to evaluate the volume of damage inflicted on Iraqi firms as a result of the British - US air strikes.

In this context, Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid on Wednesday sent messages to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the foreign ministers of France, China and Russia informing them of the consequences of the British-US attacks on Iraq.

The AL assistant secretary general for Arab affairs Ahmad Bin Hali, who as also assigned with the Iraqi file said the AL chief messages demand the need to draw up a new and accepted formula for dealing with Iraq in the framework of UN Security Council resolutions as well as to establish a mechanism providing for restoring the confidence already lost between Iraq and the UN so as to settle obstacles pending between Iraq and the UN and help lifting the sanction imposed on Iraq and preserving Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
