The Egyptian minister of industry engineer Soliman Reda stated today that the volume of industrial investment in Egypt totaled 40 billion pounds. Egyptian Minister of Transportation Soliman Metwali will place together with Japanese Minister of State Mino Suzuki at the end of the current month the cornerstone for the Suez Canal's suspension bridge, whose cost reached nearly 38 million pounds, to which Japan is contributing the construction work. The project will be completed at the end of the year 2001. Japanese companies will tackle implementing the metal part of the bridge whose height is 70 meters above the canal to allow the large ships, supertankers and aircraft carriers to pass through the canal.

The Sudanese National Council (parliament) has accepted the resignation of its speaker Hassan al-Turabi from his post. Al-Turbai submitted his resignation earlier in the day, Monday. al-Turbai had announced determination to quit so as to dedicate all his time to the ruling general secretariat of the national conference which will be transferred into a political party by the beginning of January, 1999, MENA reported.
