Syrian PM speaker delegated by al-Assad to PA's opening session
Syria, Politics, 12/18/1998
Delegated by Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, the Speaker of the Syrian People's Assembly, Abdul Qader Qaddoura, delivered the inaugural speech for the legislature's seventh term.
Qaddoura said that the "president is obliged not to attend the inauguration, as he usually does, of the seventh legislative term due to contracting flu." Qaddoura said, delivering a speech on behalf of the Syrian president, "There is a continuing increase in the numbers of women who have won PA membership. In this session the number of women has reached 26. The number of women who nominated themselves and the number of those women who cast their votes indicate the maturity of both women and society and is an indication of consolidated democracy in Syria."
He underlined the importance of close monitoring as "a national unity for the sake of which all should cooperate and nobody has to see it as a provocation or a negative factor."
He said that the modernization of laws is a national must, and numerous important laws were updated during the past years. Hundreds of laws were enacted responding to the country's needs and progress.
He added that scientific research should be given the support it deserves, and great efforts were made in this area. All necessary equipment was provided and members and staff required are being trained.
He indicated, "We should develop systems of the public sector to make it more mobile so as to increase and improve production. This needs a thorough discussion in collaboration with the General Federation of Workers Trade Union."
On Syrian political policy, Qaddoura said that for years now Syria has fought "on behalf of the Arabs, wars in confrontation of the Israeli occupation and for the liberation of the land and the restoration of rights. Our people offered great and dear sacrifices. We launched a great struggle offering our children as sacrifice in defense of the land which stands for our honor and dignity. The aggression that occupies land is in fact threatening the whole homeland and the whole nation."
