Moroccan soccer players stars launch charity fund-raising campaign
Morocco, Culture, 12/17/1998
Moroccan Soccer stars, Mustafa Haji and Smahi Triki, will launch next week a solidarity fund-raising campaign in favor of the Casablanca orphans.
The two players will offer about 1,800 winter garment items for some 600 orphans who will also be invited to watch the friendly that the Moroccan soccer team will play Dec.22 against the Bulgarians.
The player will also offer and share with the orphans some fast-breaking meals during the holy month of Ramadan.
About $ 9 millions were raised in the week-long national solidarity week held in Morocco last October for the struggle against poverty.
The week, which was organized in collaboration with the UN development program, featured several artistic, cultural and musical fund-raising shows whose proceeds will be used for the rehabilitation of charity houses and for the improvement of their services and performances.
Solidarity pins, caps and T-shirts were sold in Moroccan pharmacies, banks and various charity centers for 5, 30 and 50 dirhams (one us dlr is about 9.29 dh).
The event aimed to promote public awareness on the importance of solidarity and incite Moroccans to contribute to the building a new culture favoring humanitarian actions.
Among the Moroccan 28 million-strong population, there are nearly 3 million poor persons.
