Syrian Parliament convenes its new session today
Syria, Politics, 12/17/1998

The Syrian People's Assembly (parliament) held today its first session in its sixth legislative course, which will last for four years, in the presence of several diplomats, officials and observers.

Syrian President Hafez al-Assad usually opens the deliberations of the Parliament by giving a speech which defines the main outlines of Syrian foreign and economic policy and urge the Parliament members to actively participate in their legislative session in "amending laws and developing Syrian legislation."

Syrian Parliamentary elections were held on November 30 and resulted in the victory of 250 Parliament members, with some 167 of them representing the parties of the ruling National Progressive Front and the other 83 are independents.

Most of the PA seats in Damascus and Aleppo went to businessmen.
