Syrian President confers with US senator on Middle East developments

Syrian President Hafez al-Assad on Wednesday received at Damascus' al-Chaab palace received Arlen Specter, who is a member of the US Senate and members of Specter's accompanying delegation.
The US Senate conveyed to President al-Assad the greetings of US President Bill Clinton. Talks during the meeting dealt with "the current situation in the region, and developments in the light of recent events." The meeting was attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa and the US ambassador in Damascus.
