Report: On al-Gemayel returning to Lebanon
Lebanon, Politics, 12/17/1998
Lebanese political circles that used to be close to former Lebanese President Amin al-Gemayel disclosed a critical secret message sent by al-Gemayel directly to former US President Ronald Reagan via the US National Security Council dated March 30, 1984 on the May, 17 agreement.
The Lebanese daily al-Lewa quoted the circles as saying that President al-Gemayel announced in this message that he personally "gives up" on UN Security Council resolution 425 and his personal desire to freeze relations with Syria as well as to work with the leaders of Tel Aviv to draw proper security arrangements for Israel to destroy the national resistance in south Lebanon and the Western Bekaa.
The paper published the full text of the message translated from English. One of its paragraphs read: "During our discussions of our decision to freeze relations with Syria, we asserted the need to work with Israel to ensure security arrangements which will be satisfactory for Israel."
In another paragraph he said, "Our objectives will be kept the same, which is guaranteeing the removal of all foreign troops from Lebanon and spreading the state's authority on all parts of the country."
The paper indicated that the same circles assert that al-Gemayel is still and since he was President of the Republic embarks on regional changes which are of great consequence on the Lebanese level and the Arab states.
The circles continued that al-Gemayel retreated on the eve of his expressed readiness to return to Beirut from Paris "which was not made" because of his reservations over the Syrian role in Lebanon through his declaration that it is logical that the Lebanese people should not embark on a separate solution for their problem with Israel in isolation from the general atmosphere in the region "is but an attempt of throwing ashes in the eyes."
