AL chief discusses Jerusalem's future with Pope John Paul II

Arab League (AL) Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid on Tuesday headed to Italy for a five-day official visit during which he will discuss with Pope John Paul II the future of Jerusalem.
In a pre-departure statement to reporters, the AL chief said he will meet on Friday in the Vatican with the Pope to discuss in the question of Jerusalem in order to "ensure the necessary Islamic and Christian support for the question of Jerusalem, which is considered the most important and sensitive issue in the final settlement negotiations."
Abdul Meguid added that his visit to Italy will be a chance to meet with high-ranking Italian officials to whom he will convey the desire of the Sudanese government for an Italian role in the European Union to support cease-fire efforts in Southern Sudan and to work to preserve Sudan's unity and independence.
