Clinton addresses Palestinian National Council as charter is amended
The Palestinian National Council today reaffirmed the cancellation of articles in the Palestinian National Charter that refer to the destruction of Israel in a vote by a show of hands that took place in Gaza in the presence of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and US President Bill Clinton.

US President Bill Clinton wanted to solve the prisoner release issue before he returns to the US. Palestinian President Yasser Arafat needed this agreement no less than Clinton. It makes his life easier, especially as it could help the current wave of unrest to fade away. It would also help minimize the effect of the meeting his opponents held in Damascus.

Palestinian police arrested Abdallah Shami, a leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement yesterday after he said that he would not hesitate to kill US President Bill Clinton if he was able to. Palestinian security sources said that Shami was arrested in the Gaza Strip after announcing in a speech that was broadcast by Spanish television that he would be happy if President Clinton is assassinated during his visit to Gaza. Spanish sources said the authorities in the Spanish-occupied city of Melila in northeastern Morocco had evacuated tens of Algerian evacuees, who illegally live in Malila to reception centers in Spain to await for the settlement of their status. The sources said that the city's authorities last week evacuated some 53 Algerian emigrants last week to Spain before taking a final decision concerning their final status. Go

The Libyan news agency JANA said on Sunday that Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gaddafi on Saturday received a message through the foreign minister of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem Bin Jaber al-Thani, from Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani pertaining to " bilateral relations," in which the ruler of Qatar asserted his country's "support for Libya in the Lockerbie issue."
