Eritrea: Solution with Sudan needs political will
Sudan-Eritrea, Politics, 12/14/1998

Eritrean Foreign Minister Haile Weldensae stressed in Khartoum on Saturday his country's readiness to settle its disputes with Sudan, calling upon Sudan to "change its strategy towards Asmara."

He told reporters in Khartoum, where he took part in the ministerial conference on refugees in Africa which started on Sunday, that Eritrea and Sudan "can eliminate their disputes if they reveal the political will and good intention."

He called upon Sudan to change its strategy towards his country in order to settle their disputes.

Diplomatic relations between al-Khartoum and Asmara were severed in 1994, but bilateral relations have improved following Qatari mediation last month.

In Addis Ababa, the secretary general for the Eritrean Liberation Front - Revolutionary Council, Ibrahim Muhammad Ali, warned the Arab states against dealing with the government of Eritrea. In a statement to the London-based al-Hayat daily in Addis Ababa, Ibrahim said that the attempt made by the President of Eritrea, Assyas Afworki, to get close to the Arab states came as a result of the isolation his government suffers because of its continuing feud with all countries of the region.

"As an opposition, we represent the people and political weight in Eritrea, we appeal to the Arab states not to be the means through which Afworki would achieve his objectives, which are damaging to the common interests in the region."

Ibrahim stated that the relations linking Eritrea's opposition to the Arab states are old and go back to the era of militant struggle. Relations which were denied by the ruling regime in Asmara when it assumed power in 1991.
