Egypt: 400 extremists set free
Egypt, Judicial, 12/14/1998
The Egyptian authorities on Sunday released 400 extremists who were arrested in accordance with the emergency law in force since 1981.
Most of the released people are members of the Islamic Group (Gamaa al-Islamiya). Last week, Egyptian Minister of the Interior Habib al-Adli issued a decision providing for the release of some 750 political detainees in Israeli jails who pledged not to get themselves involved in grouping activities in the future.
Well-informed Egyptian sources said that that the rest of the detainees will be freed within the coming days before Ramadan, following certain administrative measures.
