$ 9 million raised in anti-poverty campaign
Morocco, Culture, 12/9/1998

The anti-poverty campaign staged across Morocco last October raised $ 9 million, the committee supervising the fund-raising campaign said.

The committee said cash and in-kind donations reached almost equal amounts.

The campaign was meant to promote public awareness on the situation of the poor layers of the society, whose number stands at 3 million over a 28 million-strong population, and to eradicate poverty, which cripples development efforts in the North African kingdom.

Several artistic, cultural and music shows were held during the campaign, sponsored by the UN development program. The proceeds will be used for the rehabilitation of charity houses and for the improvement of their services.

Solidarity pins, caps and T-shirts were sold in Moroccan pharmacies, banks and various charity centers at 5, 30 and 50 dirhams (one us dlr is about 9.29 dh).
