Iraqi opposition leader against foreign intervention to change Iraqi government
Iraq-USA, Politics, 12/9/1998
Iraqi Shiite opposition leader Ayatullah Muhammad Baqer al-Hakim has asserted that any change of the ruling system in Iraq "should be made at the hands of the Iraqi people."
He stressed his categorical rejection of foreign intervention for making such a change.
Baqer al-Hakim, chairman of the higher council of the Islamic revolution in Iraq, was quoted as saying in a statement to the United Arab Emirates's al-Itihad daily that the change should be "made through only the people of Iraq and any intervention is rejected," in reference to statements made by US officials on drawing a plan to topple the Iraqi government.
On November 23, London asked the Iraqi opposition in Britain to be united in preparation for the aftermath of Saddam's government. London also submitted precise proposals in support of the issue of toppling the Iraqi government.
The US Congress has put funds at the disposal of the US president for intensifying efforts to help the efforts of the Iraqi opposition, and indicated that it "looks forward to a post-Saddam Hussein" government. The Shiite majority in the south had previously joined a rebellion that was put down by the central government. Talks of joining the fractured northern Kurdish opposition and Southern Shiite opposition have not led to any concrete results with some US officials openly acknowledging the slim chance of success for any opposition.
Al-Hakim voiced support for international intervention under the auspices of the UN in this regard, but he asserted his commitment to Iraqi's unity, at any condition.
