Palestinians in occupied territories total 2.9 million

Final tallies of the Palestinian population in the Palestinian territories as stated by the Central Statistics Department in the Palestinian government stated that the number reached 2.9 million.
A press statement released by the statistics department said the population of the Palestinian territories as of October 9, 1997, the date when the census was concluded, was 2.895 million, including 1.470 males and 1.025 million females.
The statement added that the population of the West Bank, including occupied Jerusalem, is 1.873 million and the Gaza Strip 1.022 million and the number of Arab population in occupied Jerusalem 210,209.
The census showed that people under 15 years old represent 47% of the population, with 49.5% of the population aged between 15-64, and those above 65 years old accounting for 3.5%.
Educational statistics showed that illiteracy rate is 11.6%; 66.5% have medium diploma certificates and BA-holdermake up 4.4% of the population.
The results showed that the number of refugees represents 41.4% of the total population in the Palestinians territories. They represent 26% of the population of the population of the West Bank, excluding Jerusalem, and 65.1% of the Gaza Strip's population.
