Clinton's new solution to revive Syrian and Lebanese tracks
Syria-Israel-USA, Politics, 12/3/1998

Western sources stated that a project is to be proposed by US President Bill Clinton to the Israeli Premier to revive the Syrian and Lebanese peace tracks during his visit to the region in the middle of the current month.

The Jordanian daily Al-Arab al-Youm in its Wednesday edition quoted the Western sources as saying that Clinton will propose the resumption of Syrian - Israeli talks from the point at which they broke off, as demanded by Damascus and without preconditions as demanded by Tel Aviv.

The paper added that US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright made contacts with Damascus, Beirut and Tel Aviv to postpone any Israeli attacks against Lebanon until after Clinton's visit to the region, noting American fears of a fierce Israeli attack against areas of the Syrian troops in Lebanon.

The paper indicated, according to Western reports, that an Israeli decision will be issued by the meeting of the Israeli mini-cabinet, which provides for pursuing a new way to deal with the Lebanese and Syrian issues.
