Jews join Muslims in prayers for rain
Morocco, Local, 12/1/1998

Prayers for rain were performed in Jewish Synagogues throughout Morocco last Saturday, as rainfalls have so far recorded an alarming shortage in the country, threatening the agricultural season.

The prayers in the Casablanca Temple of Beth El were attended by the great rabbi Rene Samuel Sirat, great rabbi of the central consistory of central France, rabbi Claude Sultan, director of the European Jewish university of Paris and Boris Toledano, President of the Israelite community of Casablanca.

Last Friday, Muslims performed rogatory prayers throughout the country.

Morocco suffers from cyclical drought at an average of once every three years. The drought severely affects the agriculture sector which accounts for more than 20 percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product and employs half of its total workforce of 10 million.
