Weapons using uranium shells cause cancers says Iraq
Iraq, Health, 12/1/1998
Iraqi Health Ministry secretary Shawqi Murqis said on Monday in Baghdad that a symposium comprising several experts and doctors will be held on Wednesday in Baghdad to discuss the effects of using ammunition containing fertilized uranium on man and the environment.
Murqis added that the participants in the symposium will discuss the environmental and human effects of weapons which contain uranium, used by the UN allied troops during the Gulf War in 1991.
The Iraqi Health Ministry official added that field studies and reports were conducted to show the relation between the increase of diseases such as cancer and the use of shells which contain uranium.
Last May Baghdad raised this problem after an increase was recorded in cancer and deformations in southern Iraq.
