Bishara's visit to Damascus
Syria-Israel, Politics, 12/1/1998

A member of the Israeli Knesset currently visiting Damascus, Azmi Bishara, said in a statement to Israeli Radio on Monday morning that this is his third visit to Damascus; two were for political consultations and the third visit was to give a lecture at Damascus University.

Bishara added that he will meet during this visit with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa. He explained that he will discuss with Syrian officials topics relating to negotiations and the situation in south Lebanon. He categorically denied that he is carrying a message from Israeli officials to the Syrian government as had been claimed by certain media.

He added that he will convey his "impressions with al-Sharaa, if there is a need for that. The whole issue is relating to our brothers in Syria."

He added, "So far I have not conveyed messages. I rather convey my impressions to the Israeli mass media and public opinion. I am not delegated by anyone. I make my contacts in my capacity as the representative of an Arab national patriotic trend. This is the whole issue."

Bishara also underlined the importance of going back to negotiations and reviving the Syrian and Lebanese tracks with Israel, adding that there will be no peace in the region without reaching a just and durable peace with Syria.
