Talibani: Time of armed struggle gone with the wind
Iraq, Politics, 12/1/1998

Leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Jalal al-Talebani has stressed that a US military strike against Iraq would not be like other previous ones. It would be rather destructive.

In a statement to the Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am issued on Sunday, Talibani added that Washington is ready to cooperate with Tehran in order to down Saddam Hussein's government. He explained that he does not believe in just issuing propaganda against the Iraqi regime or in military measures because they do not settle the pending Iraqi problems.

Concerning military cooperation between Shiite Arabs and the Kurds, Talibani said such cooperation should be proceeded by political cooperation and an initial agreement and then agreement on military activities.

He added, "The age of armed struggle has gone with the wind," saying that the Kurdistani Workers Party (PKK) has to give up its old attitude and prepare for political and parliamentary work in Turkey. He ruled out PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan being handed over to Ankara.
